Getting to Know the TAPPEDIN Education Community
On Tuesday July 20, 2005 Jeff Cooper of the TAPPEDIN Community asked me to be a guest speaker for their on-line festival.
I was cordially welcomed in one of their text chat rooms and took a few minutes to familiarize them with our eLearning Communtiy.
After the textchat concluded I invited them to meet in one of our rooms.

TAPPEDIN TEXT CHAT TRANSCRIPT:
JeffC: I’d like to introduce Bob Zwick, who will talk about open e-learning communities and more. He will also use an off-Tapped In site to demo and discuss (with audio) later in this presentation.
JeffC: Take it away Bob!
BobZw: thanks jeff
BobZw: I am getting back into the groove of text chat so bear with me please
BobZw: I will be pushing some text statements and then I’ pause after each one for comments and questions.
BobZw: Hi. Just a little background about me. I’ve been in the industry since the mid 1960’s. I have been involved with PC’s, networks, technical training, tech writing, customer service, software development and distance education.
BobZw: I have assisted with production of five of the eight Global Learn Days and have hosted distance education chats for several years.
BobZw: I am a strong advocate for open distance education
BobZw: I have built an open education portal called the eLearning Community http://tinyurl.com/7rn7k
BobZw: The technology is provided by Talking Communities http://www.talkingcommunities.com
BobZw: It centers on cross-platform voip conference rooms (win,Mac,Linux) that include web touring, multimedia and Mp3 recording.
BobZw: with the popularity of podcasting the recording feature is just what the doctor ordered
BobZw: Our archives have proven to be a very popular resource. One recording had over 16,000 views the week following the seminar.
BobZw: Although synchronous communication is it’s mainstay we also have a BBS Forum, event calendar and a BLOG
EmilyW joined the room.
BobZw: hi emily
EmilyW waves
BobZw: Workshops and seminars are recorded and publicized in our BLOG and podcasts.
BobZw: When I say that this is an open community, I mean that teachers, students and the general public are invited to participate.
BobZw: One important feature of our voice rooms is that they were built to be accessible to the visually impaired which makes education available to a large and important sector of society.
BobZw: I invite any educator to use our portal to share any educational topic that they wish to speak about and publish to the world.
BobZw: Learning to use our technology has been simplified through the use of recorded movies about each and every feature.http://tinyurl.com/aujfz
BobZw: The next important feature of our community will be to integrate the MOODLE LMS system allowing educators to manage course materials and open the door to freelance educators.
BobZw: Every Tuesday from 12:00 - 1:00 PM Central time I hold an open discussion to talk about projects and answer questions about the community.
ChC left the room.
BobZw: One final note: Those who join http://tinyurl.com/98vqz the community receive a weekly newsletter that tells of upcoming events and delivers tips about the community.
BobZw: any questions ?
BobZw: ok - let me tell you a little about the company who has made our community possible
BobZw: I want to express thanks to Talking Communities for allowing us to use this technology.
BobZw: TC provides this technology as a rental service to businesses and institutions.
BobZw: Some of the other great things that Talking Communities is doing are:
BobZw: 1. http://www.audio-tips a free voice room community with a large blind membership
BobZw: 2. http://www.takingcommunities.com/enc a free community for Entrepreneurs
BobZw: 3. http://www.letsgoexpo.com a service that builds large trade shows and expositions like the Occusource Expo http://63.134.192.23/expo.cfm
BobZw: questions ?
EmilyW left the room.
JeffC: I’m creating redirects for your sites Bob… will post them later… what you’re doing sounds great.
BobZw: let me ask if anyone here has used talking communities rooms
JeffC: I have
JeffC: Christina just did for Robin Good’s presentation.
BobZw: Thank you! I can be contacted at http://tinyurl.com/3kb3m
JeffC: I think SusanR also made it to Robin.
BobZw: I saw ChristinaT there
BobZw: I now invite anyone to join me in the TI Talk Room in the eLearning Community to experience the technology and continue our discussion. http://tinyurl.com/aj6be
BobZw: I’ll be in the room for the next hour or so so people can come by at will
