Volunteer Tutoring Program for Victims of Natural Disasters

MyEnglish and Volunteer Tutors

Knowledgebuilder™ is pleased to offer free online tutoring services to students affected by natural disasters on writing paragraphs, essays and reports through the use of MyEnglishÓ. This service applies to middle years, senior years and college students. Since our service is online, students can access it from wherever they have been relocated after hurricanes etc. have devastated their communities.

We have assembled a group of dedicated tutors who are excited about sharing their knowledge about writing with students in distress. Some are high school students with some training in the use of MyEnglish who have offered to be peer tutors; others are professional tutors trained in coaching students on how to revise and edit essays and reports.

MyEnglish© includes an effective set of learning resources that support writing. These resources include text, graphics, voice-over-text, interactive worksheets, and self-scoring features. They include:

Self-scoring worksheets on recognizing good English
Self-scoring worksheets on grammar
Self-scoring worksheets on reading paragraphs, essays and reports
Writing assignments with provision to receive feedback
Scoring for writing assignments based on rubrics

Scope of the Volunteer Tutoring Project

We are committed to serve 1000 natural disaster victims with MyEnglish© and volunteer tutors who will help students improve their ability to write good paragraphs, essays and reports. Students will have three months to complete every assignment in any one of the following three Options.

How do students qualify?

Students who are victims of a natural disaster such as hurricanes, tornados, etc. qualify for this program. Teachers identify these students and submit their names and the natural disaster that hit their communities as candidates for the Volunteer Tutoring Program.

Here is how it works:

Teacher/Principal submits list of students who are victims of natural disasters by email to roy@kb2020.com . The list should include: teachers’ names, students’ names, school email address and the name of the natural disaster.

Roy forwards a username and password for each student and teacher.

Students and teachers receive access to MyEnglish for a 3 month period

Teachers select one of the 3 Options below.

Tutors write feedback to the writing assignments listed in the Options.

Teachers choose one of the following kinds of tutors for their students:

- Peer Tutor. A Peer Tutor is a high school student who will write feedback on how to
revise and edit a particular paragraph, essay or report.

- Professional Tutor. A Professional Tutor is trained in writing feedback on revising and editing paragraphs, essays and reports.
